Christmas Lights in The Woodlands, TX: A Homeowner's Guide

The Woodlands is a planned community of villages, pines and covenants. Here is how to plan a display that suits it.

01

A planned community with its own character

The Woodlands is a master-planned community in Montgomery County, organized into villages and set among tall pines. Its neighborhoods are generally well kept, its roads wind through the trees and its homes range from compact townhomes to large estates. That planning gives the area a polished look, and it affects holiday lighting in useful ways.

A well-designed display here tends to be restrained, consistent and carefully executed, because the surroundings are. It does not need to be large to stand out. It needs to be clean.

02

Villages and associations

The Woodlands is divided into villages, among them Alden Bridge, Cochran's Crossing, College Park, Creekside Park, Grogan's Mill, Indian Springs, Panther Creek and Sterling Ridge, and homeowners typically belong to a village association with its own governing documents. The rules about exterior decoration can differ between villages and even between neighborhoods within them.

Before you plan a display, check your own covenants and any design guidelines, and ask the relevant association if the wording is unclear. Our HOA guide lists the questions to ask. Tell us what you learn, and we will design to it.

03

Pines, shade and the forest setting

Tall pines define the look of The Woodlands. They give homes privacy and a woodland feel, and they cast shade on rooflines and yards. For lighting, they offer straight, tall trunks that wrap beautifully, and a dark backdrop that makes lights show clearly.

They also drop needles and cones onto roofs, gutters and beds, which affects fastening and maintenance. A well-planned display allows for debris, and a free in-season service visit can deal with anything that shifts. See tree wrapping for the options.

04

Architecture and color

Homes in The Woodlands are commonly brick and stone, with traditional and transitional styles. Warm white suits them especially well, and a clean cool-white line can look striking on a dark brick estate, as our gallery shows. Restraint is usually more fitting than a riot of color in the setting.

Our guides to brick two-story homes and warm versus bright white are good starting points, and the color scheme guide covers the rest.

05

Larger properties and estates

The Woodlands includes many larger homes on generous wooded lots, with long drives, gates and detached structures. These are scoped on site, because access, long runs and tall trees change the plan. We review them with a designer before final pricing, and full-property displays start at $3,000.

See our guides to luxury home lighting and the luxury estate lighting page for how we approach these properties.

06

What it costs

Our rates are the same here as elsewhere in the area: $6, $8 or $10 per linear foot of roofline by height, $5 per foot of ground lighting, $37 to $42 per tree strand and a $799 minimum package. Two-story homes with extras often fall between $1,500 and $3,000.

Use the cost estimator for a range and see the local cost guide for worked examples.

07

Timing and service

The Woodlands is a short drive from our Conroe base. In-season maintenance is free, and service requests are answered within 24 hours, seven days a week. We confirm install and takedown dates in advance, and you do not need to be home.

Thanksgiving this year is Thursday, November 26, and the weeks before it are the busiest. Booking in September or October gives you the choice of dates. See when to book.

08

Getting started

Request a quote, send a photo and tell us your village and any association rules. We return quotes within 24 hours, usually the same business day, and first-time customers receive $50 off.

You can preview a design on your own home with the see your home in lights tool before you call.

09

Design ideas that suit the setting

In a setting of tall pines and quiet streets, the strongest displays are usually the calmest. A warm white roofline, wrapped trunks on a few of the front trees and a lit entry are enough to make a house glow among the dark trunks. The trees themselves supply the drama, so the lighting does not need to shout.

Think about the view from the street at night. Houses here are often set back and partly screened by trees, so the line of light needs to read clearly through gaps. That favors larger bulbs on the main lines and an uncluttered layout. See C9 versus mini lights for how bulb size changes the reading from a distance.

If your lot is on a curve or at the end of a cul-de-sac, you may have a longer view than most. Tell us, because it changes which elevations deserve the most attention.

10

Townhomes, patio homes and smaller lots

Not every Woodlands home is a large estate. Many residents live in townhomes, patio homes and smaller lots where the front facade is short and the rules of the association are tight. A display here is about precision: one clean line, a lit door and perhaps a wrapped tree or planter.

Our minimum package of $799 covers a front roofline, including a timer, free in-season maintenance, removal and storage. For smaller homes it is often all that is needed, and it leaves the garage and storage free of boxes.

If shared walls or common areas are involved, check with your association before you book, and tell us about any limits on where lights can be attached.

11

Events and the holiday season in the area

The Woodlands is a place where the holidays are visible, with decorated public spaces, neighborhood gatherings and families who drive around to look at lights. We do not list specific events here, since dates change from year to year. Check the township, your village association and local sources for this season's calendar.

What matters for your display is the date you want it ready. If you are hosting guests, plan for the display to be up several days before the event, to leave a margin for weather. We confirm install dates with you in advance and build the schedule around your requests.

Common questions from Woodlands homeowners

Can you work with my village association? Yes. Send us the guidelines and any approval requirements, and we design to them. We can also provide a simple description of the plan for an approval request.

Will the lights harm my trees? They should not. Wraps are wound at an even tension with room to grow, and because the display comes down after the season, the trees are not carrying lights all year.

Do you handle takedown? Yes. Removal and storage are included in the price, you choose the date and you do not need to be home. The set is labelled and stored, then reinstalled next season, fitted to your home.

What if part of the display goes dark? Call (936) 499-8984 or use the maintenance and warranty page. In-season maintenance is free, and requests are answered within 24 hours, seven days a week.

A short plan for a Woodlands home

For a typical brick home in a wooded village, a good first-year plan is a warm white roofline at every level, wrapped trunks on the two or three front trees nearest the street and a lit entry with a wreath. Add a walkway line if guests arrive on foot. That plan sits comfortably inside the published bands and looks as if it belongs to the setting.

If you want to grow it, add a feature each season. Because we store and reinstall your set, the display builds up without being rebuilt. Call (936) 499-8984 or request a quote to begin.
