Montgomery County · TX

Christmas light installation in Cut and Shoot, Texas.

Cut and Shoot is a small city about 6 miles east of Conroe on State Highway 105, and its name comes from a 1912 argument over a church that local legend says ended with a boy promising to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes. It was called a town until 2006, when the council chose to be called a city.

The housing stock

What we typically meet in Cut and Shoot.

A town of about a thousand people that grew up along a state highway tends to be a mix of older single-story houses on generous lots and newer builds that came with the Conroe area's growth. Those lots usually mean wide frontage, room for a long driveway edge and mature trees that frame the front of the house.

Students here are zoned to Caney Creek High School, and a flight-training airstrip, Chennault Airfield, opened on the former Cut and Shoot airfield in November 2023.

Design notes for this market

What looks right here.

  • Wide rural frontage gives a single clean roofline run room to breathe, so one continuous line often beats several small accents.
  • A long driveway is the natural second element here, since a lit edge draws the eye in from the highway.
  • Larger lots often keep their old trees, and a few trunk wraps near the road do more than a canopy of scattered lights.
  • Houses set back from SH 105 are seen from a moving car, so bolder bulbs on the main eave carry better than fine detail.
